Letest news from PTK

Military sources confirmed to DR that Puthukuduriyuppu (PTK), the last remaining LTTE military bastion is now under siege by various offensive fighting formations of the SLA. While the 58th division, the SLA's most lethal fighting force has taken complete control of PTK - West, the 53rd division has made rapid strides into PTK town from the south. The mechanised infantry brigade of SLA has also joined the offensive and is providing excellent support to the infantry and SF units. Most of the SLA units laying siege at PTK have broken through the first line of LTTE defences, however the Tigers are fiercely holding onto the second line defence where the hardcore cadres and top level leaders are said to be based. The SLA has suffered heavy casualties since the beginning of this month mainly due to Black Tiger suicide attacks.

Where It All Began

The first such floating warehouse that attacked was stationed 120 nautical miles east of Kalmunai. That would be around 250 Km. SLN effectively engaged this target on the 17th of September2006. The Sri Lanka Air Force also supportedus in this operation. The second ship, which was a larger vessel, was located 180 nautical miles (365 Km) south of Dondra. It was destroyed on the 28th of February 2007.
As a result of these operations, the LTTE shifted their floating warehouses farther south. On the 18th of March 2007, SLN destroyed 2 vessels, both located about 1800 km away from the South Eastern shore of Sri Lanka and close to Indonesia. Then on the 10th and 11th of September 2007, SLN destroyed three more vessels within a span of 24 hours, all of which were located about 3100 Km from Sri Lanka, almost at the door step of the Australian Exclusive Economic Zone. There had been a fourth ship that had managed to get away during the attack of the 10th and 11th of September. SLN managed to track it down. This vessel was destroyed on the 17th of October 2007. When engaged this last LTTE floating warehouse, she was located approximately 3400 Km south-southeast of Sri Lanka. Taking a well calculated risk this unprecedent mission in far away waters from home was ventured deploying available limited vessels with improved endurance, improvised weaponry sans any state of the art Corvettes, Frigates or Destroyers.

130mm artillery gun found

Troops on search and clear operations in west of Puthukkudiyiruppu, who observed newly planted bushes and soft soil, have excavated on suspicion as LTTE terrorists had buried fuel barrels in this area before their withdrawal in the wake of troops' advances. The stunning discovery was made when one soldier accidentally sat on a big tree. The newly planted tree fell off with the soldier. These soldiers who are from the 5 Vijayabahu Infantry Regiment (5 VIR) of 533 Brigade have found two 130mm artillery barrels. They were also able to locate the remaining accessories of one complete artillery gun including the wheels of the gun carrier by the evening.

The two 130mm artillery barrels had been buried in 250m distance and they had been applied with grease and covered up with polyethylene covers before they were buried.Further search and clear operation are now being in progress to locate the remaining accessories of the other 130mm artillery gun believed to be hidden in the surrounding area.

This is the first time troops were able to locate the LTTE's 130mm artillery guns during the Wanni liberation offensive.Few days earlier the 58 division soldiers were able to find a 152 mm heavy artillery gun.Troops were also able to find another 2 ,152 mm artillery guns from the east.Intelligence sources claimed that tigers have about 10 more howitzers. But now they are practically becoming useless due to the shortage of ammunition and being out of range since the military is getting closer by the day.
