A New Safe Zone Is Declared


The SLA, in response to humanitarian concerns that had been brought to the notice, announced demarcation of a new 12-km long SAFE ZONE along the western boundary of the Mullaittivu lagoon, effective from Thursday (12th February 2009) afternoon, the Army Headquarters declared.

The new 12km long safe region demarcated along the Mullaittivu western coast is expected to facilitate flow of humanitarian aid and medical supplies for the people stranded with LTTE. The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) has duly been informed of the new safe zone, defense sources reported.

The entire non-liberated coastal stretch from North of Vadduvakal includes a few villages: Vellamullavaikkal, Karayamullivaikkal,Velayanmadam, Ampelavanpokkanai and Putumattalan, SLA further said.

Earlier, the Sri Lankan government on Jan 21, declared a 'No Fire Zone' which LTTE terrorists discarded with contempt, moving its heavy artillery batteries and mortar guns inside the safety zone,
